Our Solve a Mystery experiences are carefully designed to be fully self-guided, allowing you to explore at your own pace without the need for actors, props, or external facilitation. Here’s everything you need to know about the format of our mystery products and tours:

Self-Guided Mystery

  • Our mysteries are completely self-guided, meaning you are in full control of your adventure. This flexibility allows you to start whenever it’s convenient for you and enjoy the experience without any time constraints.

No Actors, Props, or Physical Clues

  • There are no actors involved in the experience, and you won’t encounter any physical objects, props, or external clues as part of the mystery. Everything you need to solve the mystery is provided in the materials you receive.

Go Analog: Unplug and Connect

One of our greatest values is offering a 100% analog experience. This is your opportunity to step away from the screen, unplug from your phone, and enjoy real quality time with your friends or family in the real world.

Your Mystery Materials

When you pick up your mystery package, you will receive your physical mystery booklet and, in some cases, a pencil.

  • Note: If a pencil is not included in your specific package, you will just need to bring your own pen or pencil.

The materials are yours to keep as a souvenir—there is no need to return anything after you have completed the mystery.

No Entrances Required

  • Our mysteries are designed so that no entrance to any buildings, sites, or areas is necessary. All activities take place outdoors, ensuring easy access and allowing you to focus entirely on the adventure.

The Mystery booklet

  • The mystery booklet contains all the clues, tasks, and instructions needed to solve the case. Follow the story, explore the locations, and work together with your group to uncover the truth behind the mystery.

Most of our mysteries are set in the 1800s and are inspired by real historical crimes. This historical context means that the core storylines are anchored in the past, unaffected by changes in the present. The immersive experience allows participants to step into the shoes of a detective from a different era, where the stories are not bound by modern developments or trends.

Self-Contained Storylines

Our mysteries are carefully crafted to be self-contained. The plotlines, clues, and settings are all designed to remain independent of any changes in the city, infrastructure, or local developments. Because of this, participants can solve the mystery at any point in time without worrying about details becoming irrelevant or confusing.

The stories take place around historic locations and landmarks that have been standing for centuries. These locations are chosen specifically because of their enduring significance, which means the clues and elements used in our mysteries are always relevant and accessible. The Route: Distance and Starting Point

  • A light Workout for Heart & Brain: We love creating experiences that give you a breath of fresh air and a little exercise. Consider this a fun, light workout for both your heart and your brain!

  • Distance: Our mystery experiences are designed to be easy walks with a maximum length of 2 km (1.2 miles).

  • Starting Point: The game always begins close to the landmark indicated in the title. For example, "The Murder by Notre Dame" starts right near Notre Dame.

  • Ending Point: The route is circular, meaning you will finish the experience close to where you started.

How to get or buy your mystery experience:

1) Website: 

Step 1: Get your confirmation email

Right after your purchase, you will receive a confirmation email. It contains everything you need to start your adventure: the exact pickup address, instructions, and opening hours.

Step 2: Pick up your mystery package

Head to the designated pickup location in the city when it suits you. There is no need to pre-book a specific time—just drop by during their opening hours, show your booking details to the staff, and they will hand you your mystery package (containing your booklet, maps, and clues).

Step 3: Start your adventure

Since the experience is completely self-guided, you are in full control. Once you have picked up your package, you can start the mystery hunt any day and at any time you like within the operating hours!

How to Solve a Mystery

  • Step 1: Pick up the crime file

  • Collect your mystery envelope at the designated pickup point. Open it to reveal the fictional crime story you are about to solve.

  • Step 2: Investigate the surroundings

  • Start your walk through the historic streets. Immerse yourself in the story and use your surroundings to look for clues.

  • Step 3: Solve the tasks

  • Crack puzzles, uncover hints, and complete challenges in your booklet. Every solved task brings you closer to the truth.

  • Step 4: Eliminate the suspects

  • Explore the city at your own pace while cross-examining the evidence and crossing innocent suspects off your list.

  • Step 5: Accuse the guilty

  • Gather enough evidence? It’s time to make your final deduction and name the true culprit.

  • Step 6: Reveal the true story

  • Open the final solution to see if your detective skills were correct, and read about the real-life historical events that inspired the case.

Bigger groups

Since you are a bigger group, we recommend dividing yourselves into smaller teams of four people. Groups of this size tend to work best—everyone can clearly see the materials and stay actively engaged in solving the tasks. We recommend a max. of 80 persones dooing the same mystery at the samer time. If more then 40 person contact us for designing your experince. 


You don’t need to book a specific time in advance. Our mysteries are entirely self-guided, which means you can start whenever it suits you best. We want to give our customers as much flexibility as possible. Since there’s no guide or set schedule, you can even solve your mystery in the evening—though we don’t recommend doing it in the dark, as it can be tricky to see the clues.

You’re also free to take breaks during the experience. Feel free to pause mid-mystery and head to a café to recharge before continuing.
The only timing to keep in mind is when you collect your mystery materials from one of our pick-up locations. This needs to be done during their opening hours, but you’re welcome to collect your mystery days—or even months—before you plan to solve it. The pickup points are conveniently located near where the mysteries take place. Once you’ve picked up your mysteries, you’re free to start whenever you like—the experience takes place outdoors, and there’s no need to coordinate with anyone else.

 

Adding a competitive twist:

If you’d like to make it a competition, the winning team is the one that solves the final task first. Our mysteries include a built-in point system—you collect points as you progress, and at the end, those points are converted into minutes. You then use those minutes to discuss and determine who the true culprit is. If a team guesses incorrectly, they won’t win. Among all the teams that correctly identify the culprit, the one that finishes first will be the winner.

Our mysteries also include bonus facts and local history about the area, making the experience both fun and informative.

Outdoor Setting

All of our mystery experiences take place outdoors, and you'll be exploring parts of the city while following clues and solving tasks. This means that being prepared for the weather is key! Check the forecast ahead of time to ensure you’re comfortable during your adventure.

 

What to Wear

  • Comfortable Clothing: Dress appropriately for the weather. Whether it's sunny, rainy, or chilly, make sure you’re prepared for the conditions.

  • Good Walking Shoes: You’ll be covering up to 2 km/1,2 miles of city terrain, so wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking. Most of our mysteries are in relatively flat areas with minimal stairs, but comfort is important for a great experience.

 Special Considerations

  • Accessibility: While most of our mysteries are designed to be accessible, there may be certain routes that could be challenging for those with mobility issues. Please contact us ahead of time if you have any questions about accessibility for specific locations. 

What to Bring

  • Snacks and Water: You might want to bring a small bottle of water and a light snack, especially if you’re doing your mystery during warmer weather.

Time to Complete

On average, our mysteries take around 1 - 2,5 hours to solve. However, there’s no rush. Feel free to take breaks, enjoy the scenery, and make the experience as leisurely or competitive as you like.

Age Recommendations

  • Family-Friendly: Our mysteries are designed to be family-friendly, making them suitable for kids and adults alike. While children are welcome to join, we recommend a minimum age of 10 years for full participation. This ensures that kids can fully engage with the clues and enjoy the process of solving the mystery.

  • No Scary Elements: Our mystery hunts are free of any scary or startling elements, making them suitable for everyone, including younger participants. The focus is on solving puzzles, enjoying the story, and having fun. 

  • Sensitive themes. Since our mysteries are centered around real murder cases, the stories can naturally contain some sensitive themes. However, you can easily make it family-friendly; whoever is reading the story aloud can simply adjust or skip any words to match the group's comfort level 

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Wheelchair-Friendly Routes: Most of our mystery routes are accessible for participants using wheelchairs. There are only one mysteries, which may present challenges due to uneven terrain and stairs. That is Operation Grefsenkollen.

  • Outdoor Experience: All of our mysteries take place outdoors, and you won't need to enter any buildings. This ensures a flexible and easy-to-navigate experience for those in wheelchairs or with mobility concerns.

Fitness Level Requirements

  • Suitable for All Fitness Levels: Our mystery hunts are designed to be similar to a leisurely walking tour, covering max. 2 km / 1,3 miles of mostly flat terrain. The pace is entirely up to you, making it accessible to those with varying levels of fitness. There is no rush—take your time to enjoy the experience and solve the clues at your own comfort level.

    Our mysteries are full of important details—some that may seem minor can actually be key to solving the case.     While the experience is designed to take around 1-2,5 hours, there’s no need to rush. Enjoy the scenery, take breaks, and use the time to discuss different theories and clues. Some of the best insights can come from relaxed and thorough observation rather than hasty decisions.

We understand that plans change! At Solve a Mystery, we aim to be as flexible as possible when it comes to cancellations. Here’s what you need to know:

How to Cancel

  • If you have purchased your mystery directly from our website, you can cancel by sending us an email at contact@solveamystery.com. Please include your booking details so we can process your request quickly.

  • If you purchased your mystery through a third-party platform such as Get Your Guide or Viator, you will need to contact their customer support to manage your cancellation. Please follow their specific instructions for processing cancellations.

Refund Policy

  • For cancellations made before your planned pickup, we offer a full refund.

  • If your cancellation request is made after you have picked up your mystery, unfortunately, we cannot give a refund.

  • Rescheduling

Instead of canceling, you may choose to reschedule your mystery. Since our mysteries are entirely self-guided, you can decide to delay your adventure and start at any convenient time. Once you’ve collected your materials, there is no need for further scheduling—just enjoy your experience when it suits you best!
